11 Common Habits That Insensibly Affect Our Appearance
Think about how many actions during the day we do habitually and mechanically. Unfortunately, some of these actions may be taking a toll our beauty and health.
At first glance, they may not seem harmful, but their negative impact accumulates day after day.
Bright Side decided to check which mistakes we often make and what we can do about them.
1. Touching your face and chin while sitting in front of a computer
I bet you’re looking at the monitor right now, sitting in this exact position. We spend a lot of time in front of our computers throughout the day and often touch our face with our hands without giving it any thought.
Supporting your chin with your arm gradually displaces the hyoid bone and disrupts blood circulation. This can result in you having a double chin and your skin aging faster.
Touching your face with dirty hands can lead to skin problems, especially if your skin is prone to acne and irritation. Blackheads also appear on your face for a reason, and herpes can actually be caught this way and 80% of the time, it is.
2. Crossing your legs
This pose can be quite damaging for those who suffer from varicose veins or are at risk. The blood flow is disrupted and health problems can appear very quickly.
The “delayed” problems of others include pain in the lower back and even the genital organs. The pain is caused by the wrong positioning of the spine, which results in pressure on the lower back. And we don’t need that, do we?
3. Brushing your hair after showering
Brushing your hair after showering is one of the most common and almost instinctive actions. But it’s very harmful for your hair. The reason is that wet hair is much more vulnerable than dry hair, and combing damages it. So your hair will inevitably become brittle.
To preserve your hair’s beauty, use a towel to gently pat it dry, instead of rubbing it, and let it dry naturally. After your hair has completely dried, start combing from the bottom, regardless of the length.
4. Binge-watching shows
“Just one more episode and I’m going to sleep!” Scientists have long been talking about the danger of the “blue light”, which comes from TV screens and mobile devices. It gets through to the deep layers of the skin and activates free radicals, which force skin cells to produce enzymes that destroy collagen.
The consequences of this are early skin aging and hyperpigmentation. Dermatologists often mention the poor condition of the skin of “TV series lovers” and even advise to use a cream with a UV filter if you want to spend a lot of time looking at your gadgets. Others argue that the blue light is of a completely different spectrum and creams will not help.
The only solution is to minimize contact with electronic devices as much as you can.
5. Using your smartphone before going to sleep
The very same blue light also suppresses melatonin production, which can disrupt your internal sleeping schedule. We may not notice our sleep deprivation, but our body does — believe me! What is more, in addition to “minor” cosmetic problems, the immune and endocrine systems can also be seriously affected.
Let’s test our willpower and set aside our smartphones at least one hour before bedtime.
6. Putting sunscreen only on your face
All the beautiful ladies have already learned that their skin needs to be protected from the sun even in urban conditions. However, some are unaware of the fact that you need to apply the cream not only to your face, but to your neck, chest and hands as well. The older we get, the more susceptible we become to skin damage caused by sun exposure
And, of course, we should remember to take care of our chest and neck just like we take care of our face, in terms of moisture and nutrition.
7. Correcting your eyebrows and immediately applying makeup
Each movement of the tweezers is a microtrauma and a way for infection to come in. It is worth remembering this and not applying makeup immediately after brow correction.
It would be best to wipe the skin with a light disinfectant. It is a good idea to clean and wash your makeup brushes approximately every two weeks. The risk of infection also comes from dirty tweezers. Therefore, they also need to be disinfected on a regular basis.
8. Covering up oily skin with powder
Your T-zone’s glistening? Let’s powder it up! Do not do this, unless you want your pores to clog up and pimples to appear more often.
First, it is necessary to remove any excess oil with special blotting paper, and only then can you begin to apply powder. If you do not clean your face before applying powder, all of the dirt and oil will remain under the new layer of makeup. This does not do your skin any good and can cause clogged pores, breakouts and irritation.
9. Using scrubs
Our favorite fragrant scrubs aren’t really approved of by most cosmetologists. Abusing means of exfoliation leads to an increase of skin oil production, while causing the skin to remain dehydrated.
A good solution would be to replace scrubs with peelings based on lactic or glycolic acid.
10. Chewing gum
We’ve got some bad news for chewing gum fans. Constant chewing can cause your jaw to take on different forms. This may sooner or later lead to changes, such as wrinkles around the corners of your mouth, which are very difficult to get rid of.
Well-known dermatologist, Joel Schlessinger, proposes to replace your favorite chewing gum with a different freshener, such as breath strips, candies, or mouthwash.
11. Showering and bathing in hot water
A very hot bath or shower may be the best means of relaxation for someone. However, these regular “bathhouses” do not bear anything good for your skin. The effect they have on the skin is similar to a sunburn, the natural balance is disturbed. Hence the irritation, dryness, infection and itching.
Dermatologists advise reducing the temperature of the water, reducing the amount of time spent in the water, remembering to use moisturizer after showering and choosing the “softest” shower products with no flavors, parabens, or aggressive particles.
