The 10 Weirdest Trends That Turned Out to Be Totally Dangerous
The development of social media greatly affects our lives. Now anyone can share their idea via the internet, and it might go viral. Even though most modern trends are harmless and are created only for fun, some of them can actually cause fatalities.
Bright Side wants to show you 10 modern crazes that you definitely should not try at home.
10. The fire challenge
Why do people cover themselves in alcohol and set their bodies on fire? The “funny” part of this fad is supposed to consist of watching how a player runs around the streets trying to extinguish the flames. But this trend turned out to be not so funny as many people ended up in hospitals with second- and third-degree burns.
At first sight, planking seems quite innocent, but it has become a real craze. Although this form of activity (or maybe it’s better to say passivity?) has no actual aim, people are constantly looking for more and more extreme and dangerous places to plank: on tigers and crocodiles, on roofs and phone posts, on roads full of traffic, and on high cliffs.
8. Wasp nests for vaginal health
Small nests containing wasp eggs have recently become a new way of cleaning and tightening a vagina. Among other benefits, online retailers of this product point out that oak galls may help improve your sex life.
However, specialists are not so sure about the effect that wasp nests produce on a woman’s body as they can cause serious burns and destroy the protective mucous layer. And just imagine what would happen if one of those eggs hatched!
7. Cactus eating
To win this challenge, you take a whole cactus and try to eat it. And don’t forget about all the prickles!
This recent trend has already caused a lot of pain. Cactus thorns can pierce from the inside of your body and provoke internal bleeding. Some people didn’t stop there and created additional difficulties for themselves. For example, they cover a cactus with hot sauce, dust it with pepper, and eat all this mess.
6. Car surfing
Vehicle surfing became popular at the end of the previous century, and it is still one of the most widespread trends among youngsters. In order to accept this challenge, you have to get to the top of a car and try to stay there for as long as possible while someone is driving the vehicle at a high speed.
5. The choking game
There are a lot of ways to stop the airflow from your body. Some teens ask their friends to push on their lungs as hard as they can. Or you can just blow the air from your lungs until you become unconscious. Some of the craziest guys choke themselves by putting a bag or a pillow over their head.
Although teenagers believe they can get high or experience an altered state of consciousness due to oxygen deprivation, it can actually cause permanent neurological damage. You might not even be able to wake up again.
4. The condom challenge
The condom challenge has 2 variations. The first consists of inserting a condom in one of your nostrils and snorting it back through your throat and mouth.
The second trick works this way: you take a condom full of water and drop it on someone’s head. The condom inverts, saving the water inside, and your friend looks like a fishbowl.
In both cases, this game can be dangerous as condoms are very stretchy and it’s almost impossible to rip them. If anything goes wrong, you can suffocate.
3. Game of 72
This dangerous challenge is really spreading panic among parents. Accepting it, children try to disappear for 3 days. They simply run away from home without telling anybody. After 72 hours, they usually come back safe and sound.
The disturbing thing about this game is that many innocent people get arrested because they seem suspicious to the police. And, of course, there’s also the risk that children might get involved in a perilous situation and never return home.

It turns out that even a small and innocent piece of eraser can do you harm. The eraser challenge is gaining more and more popularity among school children all around the world.
This game consists of rubbing your skin with an eraser as hard as you can while reciting the alphabet or any other phrase. As a result, your skin gets damaged, and serious burns can appear. The challenge can not only leave you with a scar for the rest of your life but also cause bacterial infections as the natural skin barrier is destroyed.
1. Vodka eyeballing
The main idea of this drinking craze is the following: alcohol passes easily through the mucous membrane of your eye, and you get drunk more quickly. There are a lot of skeptics who believe it has merely a placebo effect because people accepting this challenge are usually already drunk.
Despite this, physicians and ophthalmologists are raising the alarm as this trend can actually cause a lot of diseases — including complete vision loss.
